National Philanthropy: Domestic Violence Awareness

Domestic violence is the emotional, mental, and/or physical abuse by one person in an intimate relationship used as a form of control. Abuse does not happen due to the perpetrator's personal stress, anger or alcohol/drug involvement. It reflects the personal belief system of the perpetrator in that they have the right to manipulate, isolate and/or physically abuse their intimate partner. Obviously this belief is mistaken because no one has the right to abuse another human being and, more importantly, it is against the law. Unfortunately, domestic violence occurs more frequently than believed because many cases go unreported and happen behind "closed doors". Women in heterosexual relationships are the most common victims of domestic violence. However, domestic violence sees no color and affects all women regardless of ethnicity, age, sexual preference or economic status.

It is estimated that 4 million American women experience a serious assault by an intimate partner during an average 12-month period and that nearly 1 in 3 adult women experience at least one physical assault by a partner during adulthood.

Since our inception in 1989, Omega Phi Beta has continuosly struggled to overcome the injustices and oppression of women in our society. We celebrate the success of the women of our past, recognize the accomplishments of women today, and promote the upliftment of our future generations. Domestic violence is a social epidemic that hinders such progress and we have joined the fight to put an end to it. This battle begins with education and awareness.

We've compiled a list of Domestic Violence Facts and Statistics and encourage you to search this and the links below and join us in the fight to end domestic violence.

Chapter Philanthropy: Breast Cancer Awareness
The sisters of Beta Chapter chose Breast Cancer as our chapter cause due to our interest in educating others about the dangers of a disease that affects women of all cultures and backgrounds. We feel that through programming and community service, we can increase awareness on this issue and hopefully encourage and influence women of all colors on the importance of getting an annual mammogram and conducting self-breast examinations. We are dedicated to our chapter cause and hope that our contributions help make breast cancer "a thing of the past".
